Emerald City Comicon—where more than 30,000 geeks rally to talk sci-fi and pop culture—celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. And joining the party is Tia Carrere, a veteran comicon attendee known for her role as the rock diva in the Wayne’s World films. On a quick break between promoting the latest season of Celebrity Apprentice and filming the fifth season of In Plain Sight, Carrere offered tips on how to get the most out of a comic convention.

1 Perform Precon Recon Scope out in advance the stars who will be there to plot your autograph hunting. (Carrere’s most prized signature: Val Kilmer.)

2 Get Your Nerd On Don’t be shy about posing for photos with your favorite sci-fi actors. And pick up old comics and memorabilia—some of which can’t be found anywhere else.

3 Charge Your Batteries Dozens of video game competitions and more than 150 exhibits—not to mention gabbing with your favorite writers and artists—puts the geek mettle to the test, so a good night’s sleep and lots of water are essential. And hand sanitizer.
