Hungry for news? Welcome to our Friday Feed, where we run through all the local food and restaurant news this week—and maybe help you figure out where to eat this weekend.
Release the Chains
- Hole Shot: Once a quirky and uniquely Portland shop, Voodoo Doughnut opens its first Seattle store on Capitol Hill this coming Tuesday. The chain, now owned by a private equity firm, has more than 20 stores across the country. That’s right, this PNW original opened in Texas, Florida, and even the Denver Airport before sending a store to Seattle. But hey, we have one now.
- Let’s Cluck About It: It’s been a few years since transplanted Californians first got excited that someone bought the rights to franchise four outlets of El Pollo Loco in the Seattle area. Now, we finally have news of the first location: 10120 SE 256th Street in Kent, per Puget Sound Business Journal. The Mexican-California grilled chicken chain hopes to open by the middle of next year—perfect timing for a taste-off with Louisiana-based fried chicken chain Raising Cane’s, which plans to open in the U-District and Renton next year.

After a social media dust-up, FOB is again weighing out its popular sushi.

Media Darlings
- Nothing Fishy: After a social media scandal sent it mega-viral, local restaurant FOB Sushi has reopened its restaurants this week. To reiterate: The restaurant has passed every health inspection, maintains the top rating from the health department, and there was no proof (or even strong evidence) of any risk or damage to customers’ health. They closed voluntarily for due diligence, and are now open again.
- We Told You So: Seattle Met’s Restaurant of the Year, Atoma, showed up on the national stage (again) this week, earning a spot on Esquire’s list of the 35 best new restaurants in the country, with yet more praise for that rosette.

More Comings and Goings
- So Long, Sate and Hello, Momo: After 15 years here, Seattle’s only dedicated Indonesian restaurant served its final gado-gado this week. Indo Cafe’s owners announced last week that they would be “moving on to the next journey.” Indian Nepali Kitchen, which is currently 40 blocks south on Aurora, will be taking over the space and estimates it will be two or three months before they open. They have not actually decided yet if they plan to move or continue operating in both places.
- Salaam alaykum, Sambus: It’s been hard to track down Taste of Somalia’s food truck at their sporadic popups, but finding their sambus, suqar, or strawberry milk cake is about to get way easier. The truck now has an official location (11613 Rainier Ave S) and will start regular hours Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays later this month. Stay tuned to its Instagram for the opening announcement.
- Spice Slice and Mo’ Momos: Indian-style pizzas are hardly a new trend, with folks like Can Am Pizza slinging them since the twentieth century, but now Queen Anne gets a piece of the paneer pie. Desi Pizza Kitchen opened last week at the top of the hill, serving pizzas with both Indian and American toppings, as well as pizza house classics like calzones, sandwiches, and various fried apps. Plus momos, which seems great because adding dumplings to literally any kind of meal is always smart.
Oh, BTW, here’s what you missed last week.
