IslandWood on Bainbridge Hosts Hiking Day

IslandWood’s suspension bridge is ready for your Indiana Jones reenactment.
After Thanksgiving, make a single stop to entertain your family and work off the turkey. IslandWood’s 255-acre woodland property on Bainbridge Island opens to the public Saturday for Afternoon on the Trails.
IslandWood is an outdoor school, teaching Puget Sound-area students about nature and hosting University of Washington graduate students. Outside of summer camps, though, the public gets few chances to see its wetlands, bog, second-growth forest, stream, and marine estuary. On many Sundays, a three-hour tour (not that kind) is led by staff through the grounds and buildings. For Saturday’s event, however, non-students get the run of the property. IslandWood will provide maps, and tour guides can help chart a path through the woods.
One plan: The Spine Trail takes you over a suspension bridge and to a bird blind (it’s where you look at birds, not shoot at them), and a climb up a canopy tower for a top-down view. Next, make your way down to Mac’s Pond, a good lunch spot. This season is good for sighting birds’ nests through the bare trees, and ground creatures like squirrels and chipmunks should be actively packing away food for winter. Your own pets, however, aren’t allowed.
Entrance is technically free, but participants still need to obtain a ticket online; they’re free, but donations of $15 or $25 are recommended.Tickets can also be purchased over the phone at 206-855-4384.
