Girl Scouts Kick Off Cookie Sales in Style

This year marks the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary of selling those beloved boxes of baked goods. Bless them. To celebrate the milestone, Stefanie Ellis, PR director for Girl Scouts of Western Washington, wanted to do something big. Recalling an Alexander McQueen–inspired gummy bear dress a few years back, Ellis thought, “Well, Girl Scout cookies would make a wonderful gown.”

Indeed they would. And that’s what Ellis set out to do with the help of six talented and treat-loving Seattle designers.

These aren’t exactly the edible Girl Scout cookie–adorned dresses of your dreams. Instead of messing with the melty, crumbly, unpredictable nature of food-based fashion, local designers like Luly Yang, Jamie Von Stratton, and Danial Webster have created “cookie couture”, modeled after their favorites—mint green–hued tulle for Thin Mints, rhinestone-bedazzled Tagalongs, marshmallow-like layers for S’mores.

Beyond the incredibly whimsical cookie-inspired fashions, Ellis wants to highlight some of things girl scouts actually do with their hard-earned cookie money. So the aforementioned designs and more will be a part of a photo campaign, showcasing the creative fashion of course, but outfitted in those dresses will be women entrepreneurs, like Jennifer Shea of Trophy Cupcakes. And she’ll be joined by Melody Nguyen, a girl scout who was on Cupcake Wars.

The cookie sale is the largest girl-led business in the world,” says Ellis, “So of course we want to honor women who own businesses.”

To see all of the cookie gowns in person, there will be a Cookies and Cocktails Gala on March 2, for the 21 and over crowd. "We really wanted to throw a party for our cookie-loving community." Uh, guilty as charged. From 6 to 9pm, over 25 women chefs, bartenders, and business owners will have sweet and savory bites, plus drinks, all inspired by a century of cookies. In particular, the s’mores cookie will be the star, as it’s the newest addition to the Girl Scout cookie lineup and, fun fact, the first published s'mores recipe in 1927 was in a Girl Scouts handbook. Tickets start at $45.

And last important announcement: Official cookie sales kick off on March 3.
