Derek Lam Talks Spring Fashion at Neiman Marcus in Bellevue

The New York-based designer brought 10 Crosby designer Elizabeth Giardina to town and the two hunted for vintage, checked out Seattle shops, and then settled into the Cusp department at the Bravern for a luncheon and fashion show.

Let's review: If you wanted to split up the globe and make fashion assignments to different parts of the world, you'd probably give haute couture to Paris, streetwear to London, luxury designer fare to Milan, and sportswear to New York.

Not sportswear like, pilates pants, but sportswear as in the American, off-the-rack, ready-to-go, ready-to-wear tradition of Claire McCardell through Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Kors up to present day bold face names like Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, and Derek Lam—who was in Bellevue on Wednesday, March 26 to chat with clients and shoppers of his secondary line, 10 Crosby.

Neiman Marcus at the Bravern is the Northwest's exclusive carrier of 10 Crosby, and we're told the modern, textural, detail-oriented cuts do really well in the Cusp department. The luncheon presentation—which included an informal fashion show, a panel discussion with the designer and one of his top team members, and a very nicely done tuna entree from Mariposa restaurant upstairs, thank you very much—was a spot-on snapshot of where American sportswear is now.

We had the chance to sit down with Lam and VP of design Elizabeth Giardina before it began—we even sent them a hit-list of shopping spots at their request prior to their arrival. Curious where they went and what they thought of the retail scene in your town? Click the slide show here to find out.

"People think the Internet has no filter but it isn't true. If you want to know what a place is like, you have to go there yourself," Derek Lam told us in explanation of he and VP of design Liz Giardina's recent Seattle/Bellevue trip.
