To say that things are happening in Pioneer Square would be, well, to state to the obvious. Creative energy is brewing with the recent openings of Bar Sajor and a larger location for italian restaurant Il Corvo. Upcoming openings include yet another Matt Dillon project: London Plane, a bakery and floral shop collaboration with the folks of Marigold & Mint, and a second butchery from fellow Melrose Market shop Rain Shadow Meats. 

But E. Smith Mercantile isn't just about eating and drinking. Inspired by her family's heritage in the small gold mining town of Atlanta, Idaho, Jessie Poole's new shop brings a fresh take on an old idea—the general store.

General, and fresh, in that the shelves are stocked with American-made denim by cult brand Imogene + Willie, knives hand carved from antlers, a smattering of antiques, a house brand apothecary line, and pantry and kitchen items like picked veggies and flavor-infused salts. And general and fresh in that there is also a small bar in the First Ave South space. Should you need a cocktail.

Poole says she wanted to open a shop with the same sense of community that her grandfather Elmer enjoyed; she named the joint after him.

E. Smith Mercantile will indeed be family affair with Poole, whose background is in apparel design and merchandising, managing the storefront. Watching over the apothecary is her mother, who is also her business partner; Poole's sister and a "family of foodies" will keep things going in the kitchen.
