Shopping Map: Wedding Day Accessories

You’ve got your dress … now what?

By Laura Cassidy January 12, 2011

It takes a Village. Dress: Madina Vadache (from the Finerie); Shoes: Pura Lopez (from Nordstrom); Feather hair clip: Violet Magpie (from Velouria); Cocktail ring: Fossil (from Macy’s).

Congratulations! The perfect (insert name of favored wedding gown designer here) is at alterations where it’s being waxed and waned to fit you just so. It’ll feel great to make a nice big red check mark next to that line item on your to-do list, but you’re not quite done with your style homework. What you’ll wear with the dress of your dreams is just as important as the dress itself, so let’s take a minute to discuss your options. And really this will only take a moment because we’ve compiled a superhandy map to steer you toward the best shops – bridal and otherwise – for Big Day accessories.

If you’re looking for Mad Men-era flashbacks and a sweet, slightly sexy style that calls to mind Old Hollywood and classic glamor (feathery fascinators, long gloves, faux-fur shrugs), head for stores like Vu, Diva Dollz, or Rhinestone Rosie (for an economical, ‘vintage’ as opposed to ‘antique’ spin), or Alexandra Rossoff and Isadora’s for fine pedigreed jewelry with historical significance and heirloom appeal. Either way, don’t miss the gorgeous synthetic fur caplets at Calla Bridal.

Modern, organic, and locally made are more your thing? SAM Shop is one of the best kept jewelry secrets in town (gemstone studded wearable metal art). Velouria is flush with pretty things by indie gals, and Cicada and The Finerie both manage to split the difference quite nicely between both vintage and contemporary and subtle and glam. There’s a sweet little corner at Alhambra where brides of a certain stylish stripe will find arms full of bangles, beachy wedding dresses, and really great shoes; bags and baubles by the Seattle native behind Amanda Pearl are at once statement-making and low-key, colorful and classic, and they’re available at Far 4.

Some gals utilize their wedding day as an opportunity to play up their inner princess. Nothing wrong with that. Be the bell of the ballroom after stopping off at A Princess Bride, Marcella’s La Boutique, Luly Yang Couture, and La Belle Elaine’s. Yep, no matter where you got your gown, you’ll find that the bridal boutiques are best for chandelier earrings and Swarovski-studded something-or-others. Do stop by Hitchcock, however, where the fashion-forward and spectacularly stylish necklaces, earrings, and cocktail rings would wow even the future Mrs. Willls.

Now what about some great shoes and a clutch to add a little color to your look? You can’t beat the selection at Nordstrom – especially since they’ve just launched their brand new Wedding Suite. Consider Mario’s as well, where a more tightly curated selection of Louboutins and other designers might be easier to navigate. Try Mu Shoe if you’re not quite the 4-inch heel type o gal. Your wedding day is not the time to experiment with spike heels. Keep in mind that most of the bridal boutiques stock a number of shoe options, though they tend to be of the white, off-white, near-white, and decidedly not-bold variety. Luly Yang’s shop is an exception to that; there’s always a jewel-toned array of footwear behind those blue windows.
