Christine Chaney’s large-scale work at Velocity opens June 12; this is what happens when "crafty" gets really crafty

By Laura Cassidy June 4, 2010

How’s this for ambitious: Seattle artist Christine Chaney is crocheting a 36-foot wood and soft fiber work inspired by Theodore Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa.

Sure beats the scarf you barely got through last winter.

The piece will be on display inside the popular home and design shop Velocity Art and Design from June 12 through August 13.

You’re invited to celebrate the show on the 12th from 6 to 9.

Chaney used thrift-store tee-shirts and wood from rural beaches and woodpiles to for the piece; see if you don’t sense a message about our mass consumerism and the environment.

What to wear? Your best crocheted sweater I should think.
