Molly Melching: Community Development from the Ground Up
Molly Melching, founder of Tostan, an NGO that promotes literacy and community engagement throughout rural African communities, will be at Town Hall to discuss community empowerment through a process called deep listening.
While this might strike some as a little woo, Melching’s success with Tostan (over 1,000 employees working in 450 communities worldwide) suggests there is more to her approach than just being a really good listener. And her passion for women's empowerment, community health, and financial literacy are as relevant in developed communities as they are in developing nations.
Molly Melching: Community Development from the Ground Up, Fri, Oct 3, 7:30–9pm, Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Street, free (with registration)
For Saturday
Seattle Neighborhood Greenways Coalition Summit
Seattle Neighborhood Greenways is having an all-day meeting to pin down its goals and vision after coalition members unanimously requested a more extensive discussion of what the group is all about back in May. Expect them to start from the ground up (hence the all-dayness of the meeting) and reinstate their commitment to building a grassroots movement in order to best serve the community and work with city government.
One problem: the public meeting's location has not yet been decided and/or released publically.
SNG was formed in 2011 by three neighborhoods after the city brushed off their requests for legit greenways. Check back on their calendar or contact them at info(at)seattlegreenways(dot)org for more details.
Seattle Neighborhood Greenways Coalition Summit, Sat, Oct 4, Location TBD, free
For Sunday
Green Lake Litter Patrol Sunday Work Party
For some Seattleites, Sundays are all about sleeping in, putting on the Wilson jersey, having a grapefruit mimosa at Portage Bay, and just killing time until the 4 o'clock couch nap. Other people, like the Green Lake Litter Patrol, use Sunday as an opportunity to give back. Feel guilty yet? Me, too.
GLLP will be meeting this Sunday to take a little stroll around the lake and pick up the litter. Join them at the Bathhouse Theatre parking lot, but be sure to call first so they can bring enough tools for everyone.
Green Lake Litter Patrol Sunday Work Party, Sun, Oct 5, 9–11am, Bathhouse Theatre parking lot, free
New York Times bestseller and Pulitzer Prize finalist Nicholas Carr will discuss his newest book The Glass Cage: Automation and Us, which focuses on how technology does much of our cognitive heavy lifting these days. In other words, how much damage we do to ourselves with pre-breakfast Instagramming and by habitually using Wikipedia instead of, you know, memorizing stuff.
Human Consequences of Technology, Mon, Oct 6, 7:30–8:45pm, Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, $5
