The C is for Crank

Despite "Retraction," Akin Still a Rape Apologist

By Erica C. Barnett August 20, 2012

Notable moron Todd Akin's now-infamous comment---that "female bodies" subjected to "legitimate rape" have magical sperm-killing powers---isn't the real problem with his statement defending his position that abortion should be illegal under virtually every circumstance. (If anything, it's a rare instance of an anti-choice politician being honest: Only "good" rape victims---white, pretty, young, sober victims of rape by strangers---are "legitimate" victims who deserve Akin's "empathy.")

No, the real problem with Akin's statement is the underlying policy that he espouses: Requiring pregnant rape victims to give birth unless they're victims of "forcible" rape (a bizarre term Paul Ryan was partly responsible for introducing to the world last year, when he joined with other House Republicans in sponsoring a bill that would have banned federal funding for all abortions except in cases of rape that involved physical force.)

Ladies, in other words, should have the foresight not to get raped while they're underage, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or unconscious, or otherwise unable to provide consent.

Only if they fight back is it legitimate---ahem, "forcible"---rape. And only then are they worthy of Todd Akin's "empathy."
