PubliCalendar: Ending Slavery, Debating the Arena
Our daily picks for political nerds.
Usually, we like to give you guys 24-hour notice—as we did with today's anti-corporate personhood rally that we plugged yesterday.
But we got so excited about fighting corporate greed, that we missed an important forum that's happening tonight.
Go if you can:
What it Takes to Prosecute Human Trafficking, Tonight, 7 pm, Hillel UW, 4745 17th Ave. NE. Free.
Today, Seattle Against Slavery, an anti-human trafficking group, is hosting a talk by US Attorney Ye-Ting Woo, who has convicted more than 40 human traffickers, about how to stop modern slavery. Ye-Ting's work serves as a model of interagency collaboration and effective strategies in the effort to stop modern slavery.
Human trafficking, of course, has been in the news over the past couple of years here in Seattle, where opponents of sex slavery have criticized Backpage.com---owned by Village Voice Media, which also owns Seattle Weekly---for refusing to check the ages of escorts who advertise on the site in person.
And, we're giving you a day's notice on this one:
Council government performance and finance committee, Tomorrow, 9:30 am, City Council Chambers, 600 4th Ave., Second Floor.
Tomorrow, learn everything you need to know about the proposed SoDo arena in preparation for Thursday's big arena town hall at a meeting of the city council's budget committee, where council members will get a briefing on land-use policy at the arena site, the next steps for moving forward, and so much more.
