2013 Election
Extra Fizz: Election Edition
While our focus here at PubliCola has been on Seattle's 36th legislative district---where longtime Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson is retiring---a couple more candidates have announced their intention to run. In the state senate's 1st District (Bothell, parts of Mountlake Terrace), Guy Palumbo, owner of the Roscoe's Ranch kennel north of Woodinville, is challenging 20-year incumbent Rosemary McAuliffe.
Palumbo is running on an education reform agenda---challenging McAuliffe on the basis of her opposition to a bill that would have allowed charter schools in Washington State.
In a statement, Palumbo said:
"While I admire [McAuliffe's] service, her leadership has become clouded by special interest bias. This could not be clearer than in her handling, or better said, her blocking of the new teacher and principal evaluation bill this past session. Instead of creating forward progress for our schools, she chose to shut down her K-12 committee despite bipartisan support for the bill. Our children’s future is at risk when one person chooses to single handedly block all forward progress for the more than 1 million school children in this state."
At the state supreme court level, Sheryl Gordon McCloud, a Bainbridge Island appellate lawyer, has joined the race to replace retiring justice Tom Chambers, bringing the field for Chambers' seat to three, and potentially four: Former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg and King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer have announced for the position, and former supreme court kustice Richard Sanders is considering a run
