Early Morning Jolt: Spitzer to Hold Fundraiser for Inslee

By Erica C. Barnett February 24, 2012

This post has been updated with comments from Inslee campaign spokeswoman Jaime Smith.

The New York Post reports that former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned after the New York Times
reported on his involvement in a New York City prostitution ring, is hosting a fundraiser for Washington State gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee on March 5 at his home on Fifth Ave. Speculation is that Spitzer is trying to dip a toe back into national politics.
Insiders believe Spitzer’s soiree shows he’s trying to become a political mover and shaker once again — this time as a national kingmaker.

“The second-oldest profession in the world is political fund raising,” a politico sniffed yesterday.

Tickets at the event range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Spitzer was forced to resign in the wake of revelations that the attorney general, who had busted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state's organized crime task force, had repeatedly patronized prostitutes himself. Ultimately, reports revealed that Spitzer had paid prostitutes tens of thousands of dollars for their services.

Editorializing here, but perhaps hooking up with one of the nation's most notorious disgraced politicians isn't the best political move on Inslee's part?

Inslee campaign spokeswoman Jaime Smith says Inslee and Spitzer are both strong advocates for the middle class who have worked to hold big banks accountable.

Inslee, Smith says, "was one of only 57 to vote against the repeal of Glass-Steagall"---the act that created a firewall between investment and commercial banking—and Spitzer, the 'Sheriff of Wall Street,' has an irrefutable record of standing up for the middle class and holding the big banks accountable."
