That Washington
Washington State District on Democrats' Priority List
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee—the campaign wing for Democrats in Congress—announced today that Washington State's recently redrawn 1st Congressional District is on its Red-to-Blue list of swing districts. Their are 18 districts nationwide on the list. The DCCC describes the program this way:
Basically, it's a fundraising program for swing districts where the national Democratic Party thinks they've got a good shot. The 1st—Democratic US Rep. Jay Inslee's seat in North Seattle, some of the Microsoft 'burbs out to Woodinville and northwest to Edmonds, Mulkiteo, and Shoreline and across the sound to Bainbridge Island, is actually already blue. But redistricting has made it more competitive for Republicans by adding rural turf stretching up to the Canadian border in Whatcom County.
Six Democrats are battling for the Democratic slot—Inslee is running for governor, obviously—in a likely race against Republican Snohomish County Council member and hardline conservative, John Koster. The DCCC did not single out any of the Democrats as their candidate of choice.
The DCCC also named 18 specific candidates in 18 additional districts including TVW founder Denny Heck in Washington State's new extra district, the 10th District around liberal Olympia, the conservative military base turf to the Northeast, and swing turf around Lakewood in Pierce County, where Heck is running for the brand new open seat against two Pierce County Council Republicans, Dick Muri and Stan Flemming.
The DCCC’s Red to Blue program highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support. The program will introduce Democratic supporters to new, competitive candidates in order to help expand the fundraising base for these campaigns.
