Early Thursday Jolt: Gay Marriage Passes Senate Committee

By Afternoon Jolt January 26, 2012

Today's winner: Gay Washingtonians.

Ed Murray's gay marriage bill, which has the support of a 25-member majority in the Senate, passed out of a senate committee on a party-line vote this morning, with four Democrats---Maralyn Chase (D-32), Craig Pridemore (D-49), Margarita Prentice (D-11), and Sharon Nelson (D-34) voting for the bill, and three Republicans---Dan Swecker (R-20), Don Benton (R-17), and Pam Roach (R-31) voting against it.

Staffers for all four of the senators who have been uncommitted on the bill---Joe Fain (R-47), Andy Hill (R-45), Paull Shin (D-21), and Brian Hatfield (D-19)---say they have not made up their minds about how to vote on gay marriage.

Both the state house and the senate have enough votes to pass the bill, which will likely face a referendum after it passes.
