This Washington

Liias Out

By Josh Feit December 29, 2011

Not surprisingly, state Rep. Marko Liias (D-21, Edmonds) announced today that he's dropping out of the race in the 1st Congressional District. Yesterday's redistricting proposal redrew the district and Liias' address now falls in the 7th, the Seattle district to the south.

Liias had been running as a Occupy lefty. He was far behind the pack in money raised (though he boasted about his number of donors). Liias will run for reelection to the state house where he's been an environmental leader.

In a message to supporters today Liias said:
The district where I've lived most of my life and hoped to represent in Congress, the First Congressional District, will now move east and become a large, more rural district that stretches from east of Lake Washington to the Canadian Border.

Some have suggested that I move to this new district and run anyway, but that is not who I am.

The new 1st District takes in rural turf that used to be in the 2nd, making it a much more conservative district.
