Gregoire on Plan B Decision: "I Don't Have a Clue" What Sebelius Was Thinking

By Erica C. Barnett December 20, 2011

During our interview with Gov. Chris Gregoire the other day, we asked her if she was with US Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell or President Obama re: US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' decision to overrule the FDA on emergency contraception. The administration's decision, which Murray and Cantwell denounced,  will limit girls' and women's access to the Plan B pill, which can prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.

Gregoire is friends with Sebelius, the former governor of Kansas.

Here's what Gregoire had to say:

Gregoire:
I am surprised by that. I wrote her an email and told her, I don't have a clue what you're doing.

PubliCola:
Did she respond?

Gregoire:
She didn't tell me. We're pretty close.

PubliCola:
Do you think it was political?

Gregoire:
She didn't tell me that [it was political]. She said, basically, "I had to look at the fact that the report that I got didn't distinguish between [girls] under 12 and between 12 and 17, and I accept responsibility for the decision." I said, "We must have dinner and talk about this." We're very close. I respect her a lot.
