Bail Set at Half a Million for Man Who Killed Cyclist
The King County Prosecutor's Office has set bail for Nathan Godwin, the 27-year-old suspected drunk driver who struck and killed cyclist Bradley Nakatani, 35, on Thursday morning at $500,000. Godwin was booked into King County Jail yesterday on suspicion of vehicular homicide.
Godwin, who was driving a Ford Excursion, failed a field sobriety test and acknowledged taking suboxone, a drug to treat opiate addiction, before drinking something called a "Jeremiah Weed Iced Tea," according to police documents. KING 5 reports that he was driving twice the speed limit when he hit Nakatani, whose bike was sliced in half by the impact. The Seattle Times reports that Godwin has been convicted of drug possession and has a history of traffic-related crimes, including reckless endangerment and speeding.
Vehicular homicide is a Class A felony, punishable by a sentence of up to life in prison.
Although it doesn't bring Nakatani back, homicide charges could lead to some measure of justice in a tragedy police initially classified as merely an "unfortunate accident."
