TVW: Must-Watch-Nerd-TV, State Budget Edition
TVW's Austin Jenkins hosts an informative edition of Inside Olympia about the $2 billion budget crisis.
He sits down with the state's labor and business leaders—the Washington State Labor Council's Jeff Johnson and the Association of Washington Business Don Brunell—and with some policy analysts, Remy Trupin and Jason Mercier, from the liberal Washington State & Budget Policy Center and the conservative Washington Policy Center respectively.
On the agenda? All the wonky things we've been obsessing about all week—and more: the Joint Legislative and Audit Review Committee, the Citizen Commission for Performance Measurement of Tax Preferences, the B&O tax break for banks on first mortgages, reforming the state's sales tax equation, revenue sharing with tribal casinos, a capital gains tax proposal, and the governor's proposal for $2 billion in cuts.
Jenkins susses out agreements between the two sides (yes, scrutinizing tax exemptions need to be on the table) is must-watch TV for anyone that wants to get a sense of what's in play in the upcoming special session that begins November 28 in Olympia.
Great weekend viewing for Cola nerds. The section featuring Mercier and Trupin (it starts around the 30 minute mark) is particularly meaty. And it dovetails nicely with this week's ThinkTank which featured competing editorials from their respective policy shops.
