Extra Fizz: Inslee Supports Balanced Budget Amendment
In this morning's Fizz, we reported that US Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA, 1) was one of just 25 Democrats in Congress who supported Republican legislation calling for a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. US Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) sponsored the bill and all but two Republicans voted for it.
It takes a two-thirds vote to pass a constitutional amendment and with the 25 Democrats, the legislation only fell 23 votes short, 261-165.
This is not campaign pandering, though, Inslee's staff says (Inslee is the Democratic candidate for governor and certainly needs to pick up the independent vote); they point out that he voted for a Republican balanced budget amendment in 1993.
Inslee tells PubliCola:

Inslee tells PubliCola:
Consideration of this amendment is a reflection of the crushing debt burden we face, the depth of our challenges to fix it, and the need for all sides to work together to find a bipartisan solution.
