Friday Jolt: Cantwell Money, Reichert Misstep

By Afternoon Jolt October 14, 2011

Today's Loser: Anyone who's running (or thinking of running) against US Sen. Maria Cantwell.

Cantwell, who's up for reelection in 2012—and is currently facing one relatively unknown Republican opponent, state Sen. Michael Baumgartner, and one totally unknown Republican opponent, Bloomberg News anchor Philip Yin—reports she raised $1.3 million in the most recent quarter, bringing her cash on hand, a year out, to $3.1 million.

Today's Winner: Anyone who's thinking of running against US Rep. Dave Reichert.

US Rep. Dave Reichert tainted his reputation as a green Republican—one of the Democrats' big problems when taking him on—by voting for a coal bill today that will weaken coal ash regulations and take the EPA completely out of the picture.

The vote split along party lines with all of Washington State's Democratic delegation voting nay and all four Republicans voting yea.

Reichert typically votes with Democrats on environmental issues, but today's vote will help Democrats raise alarm bells about whether he's truly committed to the environment—something that was thrown into question last year when he was caught on tape downplaying his green votes at a closed-door meeting of Republican supporters.
