Costco Is the 99 Percent
Costco dropped another $2.3 million into the campaign for Initiative 1183, the liquor-privatization measure, bringing the wholesaler's total contribution to the campaign to $13.4 million---or 99 percent of the pro-1183 campaign's entire war chest. Safeway and Trader Joe's have each kicked in $50,000, and eight individuals (two from Seattle) contributed a total of $741.50.
The anti-1183 campaign has received the bulk of its $11.5 million from the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America, which has contributed a total of $9.4 million. Other big anti-1183 contributors include the Beer Institute ($200,000), the National Beer Wholesalers Association ($500,000), and the United Food and Commercial Workers ($465,000).
Both campaigns have raised far more than they've spent so far, meaning voters can expect a barrage of ads and mailers shortly after ballots drop. The "No" campaign has $10.4 million on hand; the "Yes" campaign has $11 million on hand.
