Wednesday Jolt: Republican Pollster Reports Bad Numbers for Cantwell
Today's Loser: US Sen. Maria Cantwell. Kinda.
Jerry Cornfield at the Everett Herald has a report on a Republican poll that found 46 percent didn't think US Sen. Maria Cantwell should be reelected, while 23 percent did and 15 percent said it depends on who her opponent is. Sixteen percent didn't know.
The poll was done by Republican pollster Moore Information, based in Portland.
Cornfield notes that freshman state Sen. Michael Baumgartner (R-6, Spokane) is seriously considering running.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Times has a piece today on two potential Cantwell rivals—Baumgartner along with Phillip Yin, a Bloomberg TV anchor.
Though here's a big footnote that undercuts the assault on Cantwell. Cantwell is an iconoclastic Democrat—a liberal who was against Obama's bank bailouts and fought the president to make Wall Street reform tougher on, well, Obama's Wall Street allies. She stumped to reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act, the traditional separation between commercial and investment banks. (She's also clashed publicly—and loudly —with Obama's treasury secretary, Timothy Geithner.)
Cantwell's independent and populist streak along with her green cred—she won national recognition for her "cap and dividend" alternative to cap and trade which would have directed government revenues from carbon fees to consumers—is a solid fit with Washington's blue, but indie voters.
I'm not convinced that GOP poll numbers diminish her Washington State-friendly record.
