PA Woman Loses Job After Taking Sick Leave

By Erica C. Barnett September 14, 2011

In the wake of a city council vote on Monday mandating that some Seattle employers provide paid sick or safe leave to their workers, a woman in Philadelphia---whose mayor, Michael Nutter, vetoed a bill that would’ve guaranteed paid sick leave to small business employees in late June---has been fired
for taking time off to accompany her son to his life-saving kidney transplant operation.

The woman, Claudia Rendon had already used up her vacation days after her mother and uncle died and she had to take care of her father, who came down with leukemia. Her employer, the Aviation Institute of Maintenance, made her sign a form before taking the time off saying she would not be guaranteed her job when she returned.

ThinkProgress reports:
Nutter justified his action by saying that the bill would have been be too burdensome on businesses. ...

The Philadelphia city council is looking for ways to get around the mayor’s veto of the sick day’s legislation, including amending the city’s living wage law to require sick days for city contractors.
