Friday Jolt: The Yellow Pages
Today's loser: The Yellow Pages.
A US district judge made a final ruling today against a group of yellow pages companies that have opposed the city's law allowing residents to opt out of receiving the pesky phone books every year.
The companies, including Dex Media West (AKA Qwest) argued that the opt-out law constituted a violation of their First Amendment right to free speech---the same free speech right enjoyed by newspapers and other media publications.
In his order, US District Judge James Robart scoffed at those claims, writing that the companies' "attempts to liken themselves to newspapers is a stretch too far, particularly in light of the historic role that newspapers have played in the formation and life of our democracy."
