Study Says Seattle Good-to-Go for NBA Team

By Josh Feit August 18, 2011

The Puget Sound Business Journal reports on a study—done by its parent company American City Business Journals—that used a formula (TPI or Total Personal Income—the total amount of money earned in a metro market—minus the API, or available personal income, needed to support other sports teams that already exist in the area), to see which American and Canadian cities could support an NBA team.

The study found that metro areas needed $34.2 billion in API to support an NBA team.

Taking Seattle's TPI, $176.1 billion, minus the dollar amounts required to support other professional sports teams—in Seatle's case, baseball, football, and soccer—$137.5 billion, we're left with $38.6 billion, $4.6 billion over the NBA threshold.

The study looked at 57 cities. Twenty-two, including Seattle, made the cut.

Some questions: What about the WNBA Storm? And moreover, don't more things than sports franchises cut in to TPI?
