Update on Bike Hazard on Capitol Hill
Ask, and you shall receive. This morning, we reported on a reader's bad bike wreck on Broadway and Pine, courtesy of a Seattle Department of Transportation traffic-counting tube that had been placed parallel to, and in the middle of, the bike lane. The reader was riding in the lane when he hit the tube lengthwise, flying off his bike and hitting two cars and spraining both ankles in the process.
This morning, SDOT spokesman Rick Sheridan responded to our question about why the tube was placed where it was (as opposed to perpendicular to the street, as is customary for traffic-counting tubes).
Sheridan's response: "This configuration for collecting traffic volume data does not meet our standards. The tube for the counter that runs parallel to the road should be anchored outside of the travel lane. We will correct this today. To ensure that this does not happen again, we will also review appropriate counter installation with our field staff."
If you see a hazard like this, send SDOT an email or comment on their blog.
