Mass Protest
The PI.com reports on a "Mass Protest."
Evidently Mass is popular with KUOW listeners, and I think it's fine for his fans to demand that he get his unpaid guest slot back. But the argument that KUOW violated any standard by discontinuing his guest gig is off base. KUOW is not obligated to let guests dictate programming.
Mass was invited on to talk about the weather. If PubliCola asked someone to do guest column on the local music scene, and it veered into a column about the state budget, we wouldn't ask that person to write a column for us anymore.
Nearly 5,000 petition signatures demanding “immediate” reinstatement of UW climate expert Cliff Mass’ weather commentaries will be delivered Monday afternoon to KUOW Radio.
Supporters will gather at 3:30 p.m. at the University Heights Community Center, then walk to offices of the radio station to deliver the signatures.
Steve Scher, host of “Weekday” at listener-supported, UW-affiliated KUOW halted Mass’ commentaries last month, stating grounds that Mass had ventured afield from the weather.
Mass has voiced strong opinions on mathematics education in public schools, and had delivered a blistering opinion on a Seattle Times story about University of Washington admissions policies.
