The Washington Ledge: Top Olympia Lobbying Spenders in 2011
The region's public radio correspondent Austin Jenkins has a story up on the state's foremost lobbying groups during the first quarter of 2011. He has a list of the top ten over at Washington Ledge, and a lengthier post on NPR's site
.
According to a top ten list provided by the state's Public Disclosure Commission, SEIU Healthcare 775—the union representing home care workers—is leading the pack in the first quarter of 2011 with $245,631 in expenditures. Boeing comes in second with $199,559 spent.
Jenkins reports that most of Boeing's spending has been focussed on efforts to reform the state's worker's compensation system, an issue that Republicans and conservative Democrats have been pushing all session, but has failed to gain traction among the majority.
The Washington Education Association (WEA) is another notable spender. The group has spent $150,434 so far lobbying against a barrage of bills aimed at implementing statewide Arne Duncan-style education reforms and fighting cuts to education funding.
As PubliCola has reported, most recently the WEA has fought a last-minute proposal by Sen. Rodney Tom (D-48, Bellevue) requiring school districts to use factors other than seniority when making teacher layoff decisions.
