Poll: Majority Want to Allow Solo Drivers in Carpool Lanes

By Erica C. Barnett April 22, 2011

A new Survey USA/KING5 poll concludes that a majority of Seattle-area residents support allowing single-occupancy drivers to pay to drive alone in high-occupancy vehicle (carpool) lanes.

However, 69 percent of respondents also said they personally weren't willing to pay anything (49 percent) or would only pay if the toll was less than a dollar (20 percent) to access carpool lanes, indicating that while people support the idea in general, they aren't actually willing to pay for the privilege themselves.

On SR 167, where the state has implemented so-called "high-occupancy toll" (HOT) lanes, tolls for single-occupancy vehicles to access carpool lanes range from 50 cents during periods of little or no congestion to $9 when congestion is high. Tellingly, only one percent of all respondents to today's poll said they would be willing to pay between $3 and $4 to access carpool lanes as solo drivers; no respondents said they'd be willing to pay between $4 and $5, and just two percent said they'd consider paying more than $5.

The poll, which the PI.com reported on this morning, has a 4.5 percent margin of error.
