Guttmacher Institute: 20,000 More Women Would Die Each Year Under GOP Budget

The Guttmacher Institute, an organization that does research on family planning, has done more number-crunching on House Republicans' proposal to eliminate all federal funding for Title X, which funds Planned Parenthood. (Federal funding does not pay for abortions; instead, the cuts would eliminate funding for contraception, maternal health care, cancer and STD screenings, pregnancy screening and counseling. An annual visit to Planned Parenthood is the only health care many women receive all year.)
Annually, the Republicans' proposal, which amounts to one-third of Planned Parenthood's entire budget, would mean that:
• Twelve million fewer women and couples would receive contraceptive services and supplies;
• 3.8 million more women would have unintended pregnancies, resulting in 1.6 million unplanned births and 1.6 million more abortions (of which 1.2 million would be unsafe); and
• 20,000 more maternal deaths would occur.
Via Echidne, who notes that forcing women to give birth is "the only kind of labor Republicans seem to care about.
