The C is for Crank

U.S. Rep. McMorris Rodgers Signs on to Radical Anti-Abortion Bill

By Erica C. Barnett February 10, 2011

Have you heard the one about the U.S. reps who want to allow pregnant women to die if performing an emergency abortion would harm the fetus?

It's not an Onion headline---it's real. The "Protect Life Act" (yep) would allow doctors to refuse necessary, life-saving care if providing that care would damage the fetus (which, of course, will die anyway if the woman does). I can't imagine better proof that the "culture of life" is really about punishing women---in this case, with the death penalty.

Somewhat shockingly, the bill has 100 co-sponsors, including a handful of Democrats. They are: Jerry Costello (D-IL), Mark Critz (D-PA) Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) Mike Ross (D-AR), and Heath Shuler (D-NC). Read the whole list of representatives who are sponsoring this noxious legislation here.

The list also includes one member of the Washington State delegation, U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-5, Northeast Washington), one of ten women to sign on.

We have a call in to McMorris Rodgers' office to ask about her decision to co-sponsor the anti-abortion legislation.
