Taxpayers in Red Counties Not Aware They're Being Subsidized

By Josh Feit February 14, 2011

You'll remember that state Rep. Reuven Carlyle (D-36, Ballard, Queen Anne) asked the state's Office of Financial Management to crunch the numbers on how much money individual counties pay in state taxes and how much in services they get back.

Ironically, though expected, it turns out anti-tax Republican and rural counties in Eastern Washington are net receivers of money, getting subsidized by blue, urban counties—which are net donors.

A new Elway Poll, though, shows that people in rural counties aren't very conscious of the irony. The poll reports:
Among respondents who live in counties that are net recipients of state tax dollars:
43% incorrectly believed they were paying more in state services, while
12%  had it right and
46% didn't know
