The Spokesman-Review's Spin Control blog reports that Rep. Jim McCune (R-2, S. Pierce County) is sponsoring a bill that would make English the official language of Washington State.

McCune sponsors a similar bill every year. However, this year's version is more extreme than usual: In addition to allowing citizens to sue the state of Washington to enforce the law, it would prohibit government officials from using any other language except in a specific set of situations (e.g., in language classes, when using people's "proper names," etc.); and would require government agencies to give non-English speakers both translated and  English-language versions of all translated documents "in such a manner as to afford the reader the opportunity to observe the English translation of all phrases used." I thought Republicans were against government waste.

McCune is the only sponsor of the English-only bill.
