Seattle PI: DC Budget Bill Could Bust State Budget
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget bill on Saturday to govern spending through September that would cut $60 billion in discretionary spending. The Seattle PI reports that this money could hit Washington particularly hard, translating into over $1 billion in cuts to transportation, education, and human services funding:
The PI also notes that Sen. Joseph Zarelli (R-18, Ridgefield), the chief Republican budget writer in the senate, has taken the volatility over the national budget to point out the flaw in relying on federal funds. Zarelli told that PI that "federal money has never intrigued me.”
Potentially on the chopping block is about $750 million in high-speed rail funding and, $81 million in federal aid to poor college students, $16 million for Head Start education programs and tens of millions of dollars in cuts to other areas.
