Quotes of the Day

By Josh Feit February 24, 2011

There's a state senate floor tradition that when a freshman senator's first bill comes to a vote a few people speak against the bill, using whatever goofy things the new senator is known for, to haze them a little.  In return, the freshman gets to mock the upperclassmen.

Today, freshmen Nick Harper (D-38, Everett) and Michael Baumgartner (R-6, Spokane Suburbs) got razzed and Sen. Margarita Prentice (D-11, Renton) came up with the quote of the day in response to all the goofing about how supposedly good-looking Baumgartner is.
"The president [of the senate] was not aware of a shortage of sexy men."

Meanwhile, Harper, was ribbed about being so young. However, Sen. Mark Schoesler (R-9, Ritzville) did manage to connect Harper's relative youth (he's 31) to this session's early GOP flap against seating Harper after he was connected to the Moxie Media scandal
, saying the only real problem with seating Harper was that he should have first been forced to produce a birth certificate showing he was 18.

Harper shot back: "I visited the senate floor for the first time on my eighth birthday. I'm thrilled many of you stuck around to serve with me."

Harper's bill, by the way—which prevents developers from skimming two percent in third-party transfer fees on home sales every time the property is sold—passed 48-0.

Baumgartner's bill, which passed 47-0, requires state agencies with rule-making authority to consider the economic impact on small businesses when making rules.
