AP: U.S. Supreme Court Upholds WA State Campaign Contribution Disclosure Law

By Josh Feit February 22, 2011

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge today by Human Life Washington to Washington’s ballot campaign disclosure law. The group had challenged the state's Public Disclosure Commission disclosure requirement of donors of more than $25 on ballot measures. Human Life Washington had opposed former Governor Booth Gardner’s successful "Death with Dignity" initiative on assisted suicide in 2008.

Secretary of State Sam Reed said:
We welcome the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary upholding our sensible requirements that allow us to know who is participating in our campaigns.  This does not violate the First Amendment rights of individuals or groups, but rather provides us all with useful information as we make important ballot-box decisions.
