Slog: Pot Initiative Filed
The Slog reports that Sensible Seattle has filed an initiative to legalize pot.
Sensible Seattle tried to get a pot legalization initiative on the 2010 ballot, but after squabbling over the details with the ACLU (the civil liberties group didn't think the initiative came with a regulatory scheme, nor a related tax scheme for state revenues), the effort failed.
The ACLU recently told PubliCola they weren't getting behind this year's initiative either because they think the latest initiative has similar problems, and they'd prefer a 2012 initiative when there's stronger Democratic turnout.
However, Sensible Seattle spokesman Douglas Hiatt tells PubliCola they've added a provision to the measure this year that directs the legislature to come up with regulations and if appropriate, a taxing scheme.
Hiatt also points out another difference from last year when they only raised $40,000. "I've already got commitments for $50,000," he says.
