TNT: Budget Cloud

By Josh Feit December 16, 2010

The News Tribune's Political Buzz has a cloud snapshot
of Gov. Chris Gregoire's budget. Word clouds sum things up by making different words different sizes relative to how many times that appear in a document.

Pretty cool, but I'm going to say, "cloud technology fail."

I can't imagine this looks much different than previous budgets from the last ten years. Sure, it's missing exciting spends like infrastructure projects that may have jumped out before, and it has words like "eliminate" and "reduce" (it also has the words "support" "development" and "provide," by the way); but unlike the budget itself, this summary doesn't  give the viewer the sense that the Governor's proposal is a devastating account of the Great Recession—and an indictment of voters' anti-tax pathology.

For that, you have to read the thing.
