Recount Confirms Litzow Beats Gordon in 41st
Republican Steve Litzow has officially won the state senate race in the 41st Legislative District. Litzow, a pro-choice Republican (he's on NARAL's political action committee board) and a fiscal conservative, beat incumbent liberal state Sen. Randy Gordon by 192 votes.
Litzow's victory means the Democrats' advantage in the senate has slipped from 31-18 last session to 27-22.
The suburban Seattle district—part of the swing turf crescent that the GOP controlled until the late '90s and swore to win back in 2010 —represents Bellevue, Mercer Island, New Castle, Issaquah, and Renton.
Gordon was appointed to the seat in 2009 when Fred Jarrett was named Deputy King County Executive. Jarrett was first elected as a Republican, but switched to the Democratic party in 2007.
The GOP didn't quite take back the crescent. While they ousted Sens. Claudia Kauffman and Eric Oemig in the 47th and 45th respectively, they weren't able to take out Sen. Rodney Tom in the 48th.
The GOP also failed to win back any house seats in those districts with the exception of ousting Rep. Geoff Simpson in the 47th—Kent, Renton, Black Diamond—thanks most likely to the domestic violence charges against Simpson.
The Democratic advantage has fallen from 61-37 to 56-42.
