More Extra Fizz: Is Rick Larsen Funny?

By Josh Feit December 2, 2010

Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA, 2) is competing in a stand-up comedy contest tonight—The Funniest Celebrity in Washington Contest.  It's an annual fundraiser for non-profits. (This year's event, at a D.C. comedy club, benefits the Fisher House Foundation, which helps  military families.)

Larsen got third place last year.

Tonight's competition includes: Obama speech writer Jon Lovett; conservative tax activist Grover Norquist, and Tucker Carlson from FOX News. The reigning champ is Austen Goolsbee, the chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. (Ouch. There's something cruel about the fact that a White House economic adviser is the top jokester in D.C.)

Asked about his chances this year—contestants are judged on a three-to-five-minute monologue by a panel of critics— Rep. Larsen tells PubliCola: "I’ll start out behind and then win in late balloting." (Cymbal crash.) Oy.
