and is smart a lot. On his "It Gets Better" project, Dan says:

There’s no promise that it’s going to be a birthday party for you thrown by your mother for all of your life. Bad things happen, and we all die eventually. But there’s enough space for you to create a life for yourself, to find friends, lovers, and a community.

He's also poignant:

I have this distinct memory of being at the movies with my mother, and there were two gay guys in front of us holding hands. My mother was very upset, trying to turn her head away from these men, but I was thinking, “Oh, good, OK. They made it, they’re OK. I’ll be OK.”
