Another Seattle Legislator Nabs Top Caucus Spot. Pettigrew is Named House Caucus Chair
State Rep. Eric Pettigrew (D-37, S. Seattle) was named to the No. 3 leadership post in the state house Democratic caucus today.
Pettigrew, who's respected across party lines, will replace state Rep. Dawn Morrell (D-25, Puyallup), who lost in November to conservative Republican Hans Zeiger.
Pettigrew is the kind of legislator the Democrats rely on to carry unpopular legislation—such as 2009's failed sales tax proposal to save social programs—because he's so well-liked, quite a feat for someone who has a 94 percent voting record with labor and a 98 percent lifetime with environmental advocates.
Having a well-liked Seattle liberal in leadership is good news for the delegation. However, Pettigrew is one of the six Seattle legislators who voted for the infamous cost overruns provision that is sure to be a hot topic among the caucus this year. (We interviewed him about his vote at the time .)
Another Seattle legislator, former state Rep, now state Sen.-elect Scott White (D-46, N. Seattle) was elected senate majority whip, the fourth top spot in the senate, earlier this week.
