Afternoon Jolt: Seattle's New State Senator Introduces Batch of Progressive Bills
State Sen-elect (and former state rep) Scott White (and new majority whip, the fourth in leadership hierarchy), filed a batch of bills today. He's the first member of Seattle's senate delegation to do so.
White, who was a low-profile worker bee in the house, is coming out strong: His bills include one to supprt public financing of state supreme court races, a companion to Rep. Roger Goodman's (D-45, Kirkland, Redmond, Woodinville) bill to protect the rights of sexual assault plaintiffs, a bill to prohibit smoking cars with children, and a bill to protect the growth management act.
Much has been said about how ineffective Seattle's delegation is in Olympia. Jolt is encouraged by White's agenda and will be watching to see if the traditional Democratic agenda of investing in government projects and social programs (which is out the window with the looming $4.6 shortfall) will be replaced by a social issues agenda along the lines White has laid out.
