Afternoon Jolt: Maj. Margaret Witt Goes to Washington

By Afternoon Jolt December 21, 2010

Today's winner is Maj. Margaret Witt

Maj. Margaret Witt, the local Air Force nurse who won a federal case this September against Don't Ask, Don't Tell—the policy that prohibited gays from serving openly in the military—flew to Washington, D.C. tonight.

Witt is attending tomorrow's ceremony at the U.S. Interior Department where President Obama will sign the repeal of the law that was passed by the House earlier this month and, dramatically, by the Senate this weekend. (Sen. Patty Murray, who was outspoken about the issue on the campaign trail, is also attending the signing.)

“I’ve always had faith in our Commander-in-Chief that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ would be repealed," Witt said in a statement. "I want to be at the ceremony for all those who can’t be. And I’m more excited than ever to resume my duty of serving my country."

Yesterday, Witt kicked off PubliCola's New Year's resolution series by writing a piece for us
about her goals for 2011, including this awesome line:

And my final resolution is to celebrate the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with thousands of gays and lesbians serving honorably in the military.

Happy New Year!
