Wiggins Leads Sanders

By Erica C. Barnett November 9, 2010

With the latest batch of votes counted, Supreme Court challenger Charlie Wiggins has pulled into the lead against incumbent justice Richard Sanders, with 50.1 percent of the vote to Sanders' 49.9 percent. Wiggins' lead is almost entirely the result of high turnout in King County, where he leads over the libertarian incumbent 58.39 to 41.61 percent.

Sanders, an opponent of gay rights and a woman's right to choose, said shortly before the election that African Americans are incarcerated at a disproportionate rate because they have a “crime problem.” He has not officially conceded the election yet; as of yesterday, he was seeking money from supporters to pay to check 17,000 ballots that were rejected around the state.
