Extra Fizz: Anti-Choice Group Attacks Ryu

By Erica C. Barnett October 28, 2010

Residents of the 32nd state legislative district have been hit in recent days with a mailer attacking (PubliCola-endorsed) Democrat Cindy Ryu, who's in a tight race with Republican Art Coday to replace Rep. Maralyn Chase, for wanting to "protect the abortion industry's bottom line."

The odd mailer---which features a smiling woman gesturing toward a pile of money labeled "TAX DOLLARS TO ABORTION INDUSTRY"---was funded by a Lynnwood-based group called Family Policy Action.

"Research revealed that Planned Parenthood, a leading abortion provider, brings in more than $47,000,000 a year in Washington alone---and more than $23 million of that comes from taxpayers."

"That's why it's alarming that the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights League [sic] (AKA NARAL) has chosen to endorse Cindy Ryu in this year's elections. It certainly makes you wonder where Cindy Ryu's priorities will be if she gets elected."

I have calls in to NARAL and Planned Parenthood to fact-check the numbers in the mailer.

Campaign disclosure reports show that Family Policy Action spent just over $1,200 on the mailer on behalf of Coday. His contributors include representatives of the insurance industry, the realtors' association, and the Gun Rights Action League.

Ryu's campaign manager, Anders Ibsen, said he didn't know anything about the group that funded the ad, nor did he care. "I think it's just another pathetic, last-minute attempt by an extremist group to try and influence the election," Ibsen said.
