Were You Aware of the Cost Overruns Provision?

By Morning Fizz September 23, 2010

1. A new KING 5 poll
has Sen. Murray slightly ahead of Dino Rossi, 50 to 48. It's a 9 point swing in Murray's favor from KING 5's last poll a month ago.

However, it's a slim advantage for Murray
compared to the comfy leads she's been showing in a string of other polls from Elway, CNN/Time, and Rasmussen, reported last week where Murray's advantage ranged from 50 to 41, 53 to 44, and 51 to 46 respectively.

KING 5 shows Rossi leading big with Independents, 54 to 41

Tonight, the city council's public-safety committee will vote on legislation to remove controversial surveillance cameras in Cal Anderson Park. The legislation would also bring a camera at the Garfield Community Center into compliance with city protocols that require cameras to operate only in passive mode unless SPD suspects a specific crime; and requires the city to destroy most footage after two weeks, among other things. And it would limit the use the Garfield cameras to the community center and Medgar Evers Pool.

3. A few more details about the deep-bore tunnel poll we covered
in yesterday's Morning Fizz: According to Andrew Thibault of EMC Research, the firm's client is the state Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Thibault says the poll, which is still in the field, is designed to help WSDOT "see what information people are aware of about the deep-bore tunnel---what do they already know, and what would they like to know?"

Thibault says the questions include "stuff like, were you aware of the cost overruns provision
; did you know that the Battery Street tunnel will be closed down and the roads reconnected; [and] environmental stuff."

He says EMC isn't asking a straight-up question about people's preferred option
for replacing the viaduct. Poll results, he said, should be available in about a week.

The PI.com endorsed Joe Fitzgibbon
in the Democrat vs. Democrat battle in the 34th Legislative District (W. Seattle, Burien, Maury, Vashon).

Fitzgibbon, 23, the favorite with progressives and environmentalists, is running against Mike Heavey
, son of former state legislator and King County Superior Court Judge, Mike Heavey Sr.

The PI
writes:
Joe Fitzgibbon is all of 23, but he is battle tested. He served as an aide to Rep. Sharon Nelson in the successful effort to block a giant gravel mine on Maury Island, and in other skirmishes for Puget Sound. ...

The Legislature needs fresh talent. Fitzgibbon can talk in politician cliches -- particularly on the deep bore tunnel -- but shows signs of being a tenacious advocate for Puget Sound and sound energy/climate policy. He was rated "Very Good" by the Municipal League of King County: Heavey was deemed "Good."

We checked in on the fundraising numbers in the Fiztgibbon vs. Heavey race earlier this week. Advantage Fitzgibbon.
