Re: Why Do Democrats Eat Their Own?
State Sen. Ed Murray (D-43, Seattle), who also happens to be in charge of the state senate campaign committee, weighed in on the whole Democrats effing with Democrats issue we noted earlier today.
Murray tells PubliCola: "The [state Sen. Jean] Berkey thing is interesting. She voted with the coalition who defeated her to overturn [Tim Eyman-backed Initiative] 960 [which required a two-thirds vote of the legislature to increase taxes] and raise taxes. How do we ever get conservative D senators to vote on anything progressive again?"
Murray's point cuts to a big issue for Democrats next session. "The Berkey thing" is this: Progressives pressured Berkey to vote for taxes this year, and she did, and then progressives set up a faux conservative PAC called Cut Taxes PAC to help squeeze her out as they simultaneously attacked her from the left.
According to Democrats in Olympia, the progressives, who basically took out Berkey, are setting up toxic session in 2011 by alienating moderate Democrats beyond repair.
