Morning Fizz
If Liquor Privatization Passes
1. Along with some other local bloggers, Erica sat down with U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday
.
Here are a few outtakes:
On Republican messaging: "When I first ran for office many years ago, my daughter was, like, eight years old. She wrote this book about the difference between Democrats and Republicans, and I think I still have it someplace. And it's stuff like, 'Republicans have wine and cheese and Democrats have beer and crackers.' It was just funny. But one of her things was, 'Democrats have pamphlets with tons of words, and Republicans have tons of pictures.' That was an eight year old looking at the world, and sometimes that is so frustrating. In order to explain where we are and where we've been, it takes a lot of words and reminding people and bringing them through the history. Whole lot easier to take a snapshot of today and say this is where we were and not think about it."
On the $50 billion Obama transpo funding proposal, which she's been reluctant to support: "I have long believed that investing in transportation is one of the best ways to create jobs ... but I haven't come out to endorse or oppose the proposal."
On earmarks: "The party that talks a lot about our forefathers and our constitution wants to ignore the power of the purse, which resides in Congress. ... I take that very seriously.
2. We snapped two great photos yesterday. Erica took one of McGinn (after interviewing him about his parking rate increase proposal) and Jack Hunter, who we sent to last night's Sounders game, took the other. (Last night's game was a 0-0 draw, which complicated the Sounders' playoff hopes.)
McGinn heading back to City Hall with his security guy.
Sounder Leonardo Gonzalez takes a shot during the second half.
3. The Association of Washington Cities has done a breakdown of how many outlets could be selling hard liquor city by city across the state if privatization passes.
Seattle could jump from 22 today to 552 outlets selling hard liquor. Spokane could jump from 12 to 164. But yeah, yeah, big cities are already overrun with decadence.
Moses Lake could go from 1 to 34.
4. The Seattle Times has the latest on the John T. Williams shooting. What was officer Ian Birk asked by the SPD immediately after killing Williams?
